Candice Morgan and the DTV team visited Madagascar last year. One of their stops was at the Fo. Fa. Ma. School of the Deaf, which combines both academic and vocational training. Two pupils lead Candice on a tour of the school, stopping by some of the classes to see what the pupils are currently learning.

Candice Morgan meets Michelle Nkamankeng , who published her first book last year, making her the youngest South African author. Michelle talks about when her love of reading started, and what shaped her decision to write her own book. Michelle’s parents have been very supportive of her interests and writing, but it was still up to Michelle to push them to submit her book for publication.

St Vincent School Movie Night

Troy Panaino attended the St Vincent School for the Deaf Movie Night earlier this year. St Vincent School held their first open-air movie night in late 2016. It is both a social event for the Deaf, and a fund-raising initiative, and Troy learned all about this from the organiser, Rachel Gray.

Expect more events like this from St Vincent School once summer rolls around again.

Lien explains the concept and how colours influence our mood, and can be used in treating certain ailments. Candice Morgan meets Qobo Ningiza, an aspiring human rights lawyer who happens to be deaf. Qobo did not let the challenges he faced getting into university get in the way of achieving his dream. After first studying a BA Law at North West University, he enrolled for his LLB at UCT.

Qobo talks about accessibility at UCT, and what more could be done for deaf awareness. Finally, Qobo talks about why he was drawn to human rights law, and how he intends applying what he has learnt after graduation.
