NID Sign Superstars!

Earlier this year the National Institute for the Deaf hosted the very first Gala Event of NID Sign Superstars!

The National Institute for the Deaf (NID)’s department for Integrated Support Services (ISS) launched this exciting, nationwide competition in September 2016. The aim of the competition is to promote South African Sign Language – to show its diversity, its vibrancy and its beauty.

A panel of experts compiled a Top 50, and then the public voted to narrow this down to five finalists, who all presented their entry live at the Gala Event. And DTV was there to capture all the excitement, including the announcement of the winners.

Please note: there is no South African Sign Language lesson in this episode.

Candice Morgan is at the UJ campus to meet Princess Sibanda, a young student who isn’t slowed down by her Muscular Dystrophy. During her school years, Princess always had the support and assistance of her family, and thought that at UJ things would be more difficult without them around. But her own determination, and the assistance of the UJ disability unit, has seen her become an inspiration to other students.

CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa) was established in 1976, and Candice learns more about the history, and all that the foundation has achieved since then. Later, Candice meets Richard Laskey, a man who has raised R28-million for CHOC, but isn’t close to being done raising funds.
